Recommitting to What Is Possible with AVID
in the New Year

As we settle back in from a much deserved break, the question now becomes: how can we further develop ourselves and our students over the next few months? As educators, we are constantly refining our practice, honing our skills, and working with our students to grow. A new year brings 365 days of new possibilities, adventures, and goals.

As we step into 2024, AVID's Stacey Bush shares ways our partners can recommit to the transformative power of AVID strategies and principles to continue to set the stage for continued success and growth in students and their academics. Read More

Let’s begin by instituting a refocus on short-term and long-term goals using AVID strategies. To do this, try revisiting goals that you have set for yourself, or with students. Is it time to revisit student goals from earlier in the school year? Haven’t worked with goal setting yet? No problem! In our File Sharing on MyAVID, we have plenty of support materials for working with goal setting. Try accessing specific goal setting materials by clicking here after you log in. Even setting a small goal can set a much larger plan into motion.

The new year often brings a new semester, which can be a perfect time to revisit and refine note-taking techniques. One idea could be to demonstrate a Think–Aloud. Use a document camera or project your screen to display real-time note-taking for students. Take notes over a source while verbalizing the thinking underlying the note-taking. As with any form of writing, taking notes in front of students and modeling the best practices allows students to see the mental work that occurs during the note-taking process.

In addition to modeling for students and setting goals, we can always think through and revisit our commitment to collaborative learning environments. Where could you add in the opportunity for students to learn from each other and foster teamwork? Maybe consider setting a group goal for the new year, or have students set goals for small groups they work with. It could be time for students to refine their note-taking skills by collaborating with a peer(s) on the notes they take.

Another idea could be station rotations, where you as the facilitator determine what will occur in each station. If you have not had the opportunity to engage in station rotations, take a look (or listen!) to Optimize Station Rotation in Blended Learning, available on AVID Open Access. Engaging students in opportunities to collaborate will only enhance their understanding of collaboration and further develop their skills for future college and career opportunities.

As we embrace this new year and AVID’s focus on college and career opportunities, let us challenge each other to continue to develop ways for students to set goals, refine skills, collaborate, and explore. It is imperative that we continue to learn and get out of our comfort zone to support our students. How will you:

Explore resources for college and career preparation?

Explore scholarship opportunities?

Explore more ways to integrate real-world applications into lessons?

As a benefit of membership, dive into AVID Schoolwide Advisory, which offers materials for engaging students in the questions above and more! We would love to hear from you and your students on ways that you are exploring during the spring semester. Please share on our AVID Educators page or any of our social media accounts. We cannot wait to hear from you!

With 53% of students from socioeconomically disadvantaged households and 24% of students identified as English language learners, the school urgently needed a unified approach to uplift and support students. Read More

Sign Up for Spring 2024 Administration of the AVID Collective Educator Agency Survey and the AVID Student Agency Survey

We are encouraging schools and districts to participate in the spring 2024 administration of the AVID Collective Educator Agency Survey and the AVID Student Agency Survey. These surveys are free tools available to any school in an AVID district. If interested, please review the information below and sign up your campus or district to be contacted with next steps. Read More

The AVID Collective Educator Agency Survey takes approximately 5 minutes for educators to complete. It provides insight into the extent to which educators on a campus take intentional actions based on shared beliefs and trust that, together, they can increase opportunity and measurable success for all students and each other. The AVID Student Agency Survey takes approximately 6 to 7 minutes for students to complete and helps educators understand the extent to which students are building relationships, persisting through obstacles, and activating academic and social-awareness skills.

For best results/utility, the survey should be administered to all educators and/or all students on a campus. There will be a 6-week administration window, from mid-April to the end of May 2024. After participating, campus/district leaders will be provided with a school-level summary report that also includes an overall summary of national findings.

Participation in these surveys provides helpful information that is aligned with the AVID Framework and with parts of the AVID CCI. Site Teams can also use these data to inform targeted efforts to monitor student growth and development as a reflection of implementation fidelity and return on investment.

We encourage you to review the User Guide for each survey by clicking the links below:

  • 10th, 11th, and 12th grade teachers — In partnership with Roadtrip Nation, we have posted a new career exploration unit. Find The Roadtrip Nation Experience Unit in Term 2 of the WAG.
  • In addition, we’d like to point out some special features in the WAG for AVID Elective high school teachers:
  • As a reminder, we’d like to review the 48 units (!) that have been posted on the new WAG site for Terms 1 and 2:

Throughout this transitional year, both the new and existing WAG terms will remain accessible on MyAVID, ensuring teachers have the flexibility to choose between both WAG options. This approach guarantees minimal disruption in the delivery of AVID Elective instruction and allows districts time to adapt to the revised standards. As a reminder, the new WAG units are aligned with our revised AVID Elective Standards (taking effect in 2024–25) and include Google formats for most unit resources.

To guide you through implementing the new WAG terms, view our WAG one-pager for recommendations designed for AVID educators at every experience level.
