5 Ways to Support Yourself (2) (1)

Five AVID-Approved Tips to Support You This Holiday Season

As educators, our primary focus is on taking care of others, but we often forget the importance of self-care for our own well-being and success. We are all familiar with the usual advice of getting enough sleep, eating healthy, and exercising regularly, but putting these into practice can be challenging. With the holiday season upon us and beyond, AVID's Stacey Bush shares some practical ideas that we always recommend to our AVID students—time to practice what we preach! Read More

1) Regular Breaks

When you are at work and have a break with colleagues, how often do you talk about school? Take a mental break! Make a rule with your colleagues to talk about something else during that time to recharge and build community. We practice this with students—why not with each other?

  • According to AVID Critical Thinking and Engagement: A Schoolwide Approach, learning names and making connections are some of the most pressing needs to begin learning about each other and sharing about yourselves. A primary goal during relational capacity building is discovering shared similarities between community members.

2) Social Connections

This one is tough. It is easy to become consumed with the tasks and activities that the school year offers. How do you maintain a healthy balance between school and personal life? Call a friend on your way to or from school to keep that connection! It is also ok to go out on a school night! Try setting up a coffee date, dinner, or a fun activity with someone you haven’t seen in a while. Creating that balance will keep you fresh and engaged in the world around you, which benefits you and your students. Stay connected with friends, family members, and colleagues for support.

3) Hobbies and Interests

We know that hobbies and activities bring us joy and relaxation, but how do we bring that into the classroom or school environment? Consider a team-building activity with your peers to share your ways of relaxing. This is another great way to build relationships, share some laughs, and dare I say, have fun? There are many activities that would work for professional or full-staff meetings in AVID Critical Thinking and Engagement: A Schoolwide Approach.

4) Goals and Celebrations

Acknowledge and celebrate small achievements during the school year. A lesson plan went so well that you want to share it with others—how are you able to do this in your current environment? How can you start this if a system isn’t already in place? As educators, we grow stronger by leaning on each other and sharing ideas. Building relationships with your colleagues who know exactly what you are going through will allow you to grow your support network and feel better at the same time. Did you know that we even have an AVID Facebook Educators group that you can use to create social connections and build support? Check it out here. You are not alone in the work you are doing!

5) Limiting Perfectionism

This is the most important one that we all suffer from at one time or another (or always). Recognize that perfection is unattainable, and mistakes are a natural part of the learning process. We share this with students all the time, so why can’t we show ourselves the same grace? Strive for progress rather than perfection. Balancing career demands with self-care is essential for long-term success. You’ve got this, now go and be great!

San Marino Elementary

When Dr. Omaira Lee took on the role of principal at San Marino Elementary, a K–6 school located in Buena Park, CA, she wanted to elevate academic success—and not just temporarily.

She desired to create a foundation for long-term success by improving the educational experience for both students and educators and recognized the way to achieve this was to:

1. Empower teachers to challenge themselves and enhance their teaching practices.

2. Ensure high-quality, rigorous instruction in every classroom.

So, how did Dr. Lee make this vision a reality? The secret ingredient was AVID! Explore the case study below for San Marino Elementary's remarkable success story and enduring impact.

“Here We Go Again”

School improvement status was not a new concept for the staff at Holbrook JHS. “Sixteen years ago, we were in school improvement, just like we were last year or the last few years,” explained teacher Elizabeth Baloo. “We never seemed to get out of it, like we’d just get up high enough, and then we’d go back. It seemed like for the longest time, every single year, we implemented something different.” In the 2019–2020 school year, when the Arizona Department of Education assigned Holbrook JHS a D rating, the staff recognized that to get different results, they needed to take different actions.

Planning an Exit Strategy

What Holbrook district and school staff wanted was clear: to exit school improvement status. When deciding how to achieve that, they included AVID in their Integrated Action Plan and focused on the following goals:

  • Align staff’s thinking and actions to get them working toward the same goal.
  • Transition to student-centered learning.
  • Create rigorous learning experiences for every student.
Holbrook JHS recognized that these goals weren’t simply to get them out of school improvement status; they were intended to set their students up for success when navigating all of life’s possibilities.

One Step at a Time

To avoid overwhelming staff and students, Cheri Grau led Holbrook JHS in a gradual approach to AVID implementation rather than trying to implement every component at once. She began by:
  • Engaging educators in AVID professional development.
  • Sharing instructional strategies to implement in each classroom.
  • Evaluating strategy implementation progress and providing support.
In taking a chance on yet another approach to exiting school improvement status, Holbrook JHS educators demonstrated their commitment to and belief in their ability to make positive change happen.

Lasting Change, at Last

In the 2022–2023 school year, Holbrook JHS successfully exited school improvement status, elevating its rating from a low D to a high C. And now, as of November 2023, they have attained a B rating and are one of the highest-scoring schools among those in surrounding districts. What made this most recent effort different? AVID empowered educators to address the root causes of challenges, fundamentally transforming the school culture and systems. The use of AVID strategies revolutionized the learning environment, fostering trusting relationships between educators and students, encouraging students to think critically, engage in their learning, and make connections between what they’re learning and their future. Now, students are engaging in discussions about careers and opportunities they had not previously considered and have begun to set meaningful goals and take concrete steps to achieve them. The staff’s decision to persevere and try something new yet again—after numerous setbacks—is a testament to Holbrook JHS’ grit and one that has created lasting, positive change for students and educators alike.
