AVID Site Teams – 2022 Suite of Resources

How is the 2022 AVID Site Team experience different from years prior?

In reviewing feedback from you, our partners, we knew there was a need for differentiated Site Team materials, delivered in a mode that works for you—either in-person or virtual! The 2022 AVID Site Team materials include common content as a summer learning launching point, as well as three differentiated pathways based on where schools are in the goal-setting process.

Whether your site is creating a new goal, refining an existing goal by evaluating progress, or ensuring stability of an already achieved goal (or maybe even a mix of all three), we have summer learning for you! Through the new AVID Site Team Portal, launching in April, Site Teams can access summer modules, as well as year-long modules, to support their goals.

What does year-long AVID Site Team support include?

With the upcoming new Site Team Portal, sites will have access to a suite of resources designed to provide Site Teams with a purposeful year-long experience. The first scheduled professional learning opportunity will occur through AVID Summer Institute and/or AVID DigitalXP, utilizing our new Site Team Portal. For those who do not attend summer learning, the Site Team Portal will provide an opportunity to download and engage with the same quality content.

The content has been designed to have Site Coordinators and Site-Based Leadership facilitate the Site Team session at their table, empowering sites to set goals based on their site’s or district’s data and priorities. Teams will participate in common content around the AVID Site Team to build and sustain collective educator agency and the elements of a highly effective Site Team.

They will then have an opportunity for differentiated professional learning, empowering sites to take ownership of their goal-setting process regardless of their entry points (Creating a New Goal, Refining an Existing Goal, or Ensuring the Sustainability of an Achieved Goal). District Directors may choose to facilitate the common content together before empowering sites to facilitate their own meetings for goal-setting, all while offering support and answering questions.

Within the portal, teams will also have access to Year-Long Site Team Meeting modules that will support them in using the Continuous Improvement Cycle to guide the development, monitoring, and refining of site goals throughout the year. The Site Team Meeting modules are in line with Site Teams Months at a Glance, are designed for use during regularly scheduled Site Team meetings, and can be facilitated by District Directors, Site Coordinators, Site Leaders, or other Site Team members. In addition, Site Team resources (Site Team Months at a Glance and Site Team Guiding Questions) will be included in the 2022 AVID Handbook.

We can’t wait to launch our AVID Site Team Portal and help you utilize the differentiated AVID Site Team content to take ownership of your site goals!

AVID + Tableau: New Data Reporting for Our Partners!

AVID is excited to be partnering with data visualization software company Tableau to bring more dynamic data reporting and analysis capabilities to our partners!

Our first reporting tool as part of this partnership is the Professional Learning Registrations report. Superintendents, District Directors, and Principals can access a report of their 2022 Professional Learning Registrations as well as their historical registrations going back to 2019. Users can also view a list of 2022 registrants with key data flags, such as whether they have accessed the learning management system, started their pre-work, attended the event, or completed the event.

This tool is available through the Professional Learning Registrations link under Quick Links on the MyAVID homepage.

AVID Elective Student Badging

AVID Student Badges as a Group

AVID Elective students in grades 9–11 will now be able to obtain an AVID digital badge! These grade-level badges recognize AVID students for building skills in key areas of the AVID College and Career Readiness Framework—for the rigorous academic preparedness, student agency, and opportunity knowledge they achieve through the AVID Elective class. Lesson plans will be posted in the Framework Friday section of the Weeks at a Glance to help students define the ‘why’ behind digital badging and show evidence of their learning.

Teachers will award badges to students in grades 9–11 through AVID Digital Badging. More information about this process will be provided in the April AVID Community newsletter.

Seniors will continue to opt in and enter their personal email for AVID Graduate badge delivery when they submit their Senior Data. There is no change to this process. Information about the process for seniors can be found on Day 151 of the Weeks at a Glance.

Instructional Spotlight – Strategies That Stick

Educators who care. AVID strategies. These two seemingly separate and unrelated factors are often included in a long list of reasons AVID students and alumni give for why AVID works. But what if they aren’t unrelated? What if relationships and strategies are two sides of the same coin?

Rebecca Annie Alvarez Garcia, an AVID alumna and San Diego State University School of Teacher Education student currently student-teaching at Hoover High School in San Diego, recently shared that her reason for becoming a teacher is the positive impact a few teachers had on her. She said, “It was more than a student-teacher relationship—there were a few teachers that really cared for me, and they showed it by taking the time to get to know me, and then encouraging me to do things I never thought possible. They intentionally taught me specific AVID strategies that would help me be successful in rigorous courses because they believed in me and knew the strategies I needed to master so I would be successful. And I want to do that for my students.”

Think about that for a minute: she had a few teachers who greatly impacted her life because their relationship was more than a student-teacher relationship. It was different because these teachers truly cared, and then taught her specific strategies that supported her individual learning because they believed in her individual determination. And it worked. She took those strategies with her to college and is now bringing them back to her classroom, hoping to have the same impact on the students she will teach.

Strategies that stick are strategies where relationships are the glue. They stick because teachers take the time to get to know their students—their interests and dreams—and then teach specific strategies to develop their skills. And in doing so, educators redefine the student-teacher relationship.
