Rethinking Access:
A Multilingual Pathway to Calculus

Infographic showing 126 newcomer students accessed advanced math and 61 earned college credit

When Pasco High School created a multilingual accelerated math pathway, the impact was immediate: 126 newcomer students have now accessed advanced math, and 61 have earned college credit—compared to just one multilingual student before the program began. See how AVID strategies and purposeful professional learning helped one teacher’s vision grow into a model that any school can replicate.

AVID Excel Students Outperformed Their Peers in English Proficiency

Infographic showing 21% of AVID Excel Students reclassified versus 12% of non-Excel students

A new independent study shows that nearly twice as many AVID Excel students were reclassified as English proficient by 9th grade as their non‑Excel peers. AVID Excel students showed stronger growth in English language proficiency and increased access to college‑preparatory coursework.

The study also highlights something equally important: The practices taught in AVID Excel extend beyond the elective. Teachers reported using AVID Excel strategies in their content classes, benefiting a wider range of students. When educators applied routines such as structured speaking opportunities, scaffolded reading strategies, and purposeful academic language support, more students—multilingual and nonmultilingual learners alike—experienced gains.

AVID Excel is more than a single course. It is a set of high‑impact, transferable instructional practices that improve learning across classrooms. The study offers clear direction for continued refinement and expansion of strategies that consistently build language, confidence, and access to opportunity.

Behind the Tools Educators Trust: Shanda Martin’s AVID Story

Shanda Martin cheering in an audience.

If you’ve ever used an AVID Elective Weeks-at-a-Glance lesson, led a Community of Practice, or relied on AVID strategies in your classroom, you’ve experienced the work of Shanda Martin and the Core Products and Services Team at AVID Center. Shanda focuses on one thing: making AVID easier to implement well so that educators can focus on students.

Shanda’s advice to partners is clear: AVID has its greatest impact when implemented as a system, not a collection of strategies. Lean into your AVID Site Team, use the implementation tools, and try Shanda’s favorite organizer—Here’s What, So What, Now What—to help students and educators move from information to action.

What Happens When an AVID Site Team Learns Together

3 teachers standing behind a lit sign that says "AVID"

When Bernard Campbell Middle School’s AVID Site Team (three members of which are pictured above) committed to attending AVID Summer Institute (SI) together, they were looking for practical ways to make teaching and learning more consistent across their campus. They already had strong AVID practices in place, but students’ experiences varied from room to room. The team believed that if they could align their instructional routines and deepen their shared understanding of AVID strategies, they could create a more cohesive, engaging learning environment for all students.

That mindset shaped how they approached SI. They looked for routines that would support rigorous instruction, strengthen students’ sense of belonging, and make classroom expectations more predictable from one period to the next.

This summer’s 3‑day AVID Summer Institutes offer that same opportunity: practical strategies, collaborative learning, and dedicated Site Team time in locations across the country, throughout the summer.
