AVID Secondary Implementation Tool

Nearly a decade ago, AVID introduced the Secondary Coaching and Certification Instrument (CCI). Since then, we've listened to your feedback on the transformative impact a quality AVID implementation can have on a campus and the need for a revised certification tool that is both relevant and easier to use. This is why we are excited to announce a brand new secondary resource—the AVID Secondary Implementation Tool. The Secondary Implementation Tool reflects our learnings from you and the evolving landscape of AVID implementation.

What we know from over 45 years of implementation is that the AVID Elective produces proven results when it is implemented as designed. Strong implementation takes a multi-year commitment to ensure the core components of AVID are in place and fully leveraged over time. AVID works when school leaders, teachers, and students alike are engaged and invested in the process of continuous growth across a logical continuum. Since implementing the AVID Elective with quality requires sustained effort over time and reflection on what is working well and what can be improved, the Secondary Implementation Tool serves as a self-assessment instrument that enables schools to get the most out of AVID and show the greatest return on effort. In essence, this tool should be primarily viewed as a planning resource.

What's New With the AVID Secondary Implementation Tool?

It is important to know that we have built flexibility into this tool. Some schools may want to focus on the Elective and are not yet ready in their implementation journey to consider bigger schoolwide impacts from AVID. They can complete the Elective section and wait until they are ready to move on to the Schoolwide section. Other schools may be ready to assess AVID Schoolwide, because they already have a strong Elective foundation, and they should do so.

This distinction helps sites focus on the foundation of a quality Elective implementation first, providing more flexibility and options when using the new tool.  While we continue to hold schoolwide implementation as critical to increasing AVID's impact for all students, we prioritize a strong Elective core as the foundation for schoolwide success.

AVID Secondary Implementation Tool

Key Enhancements

With this revision, the core components of AVID remain the same (e.g., AVID Elective, AVID College and Career Readiness Framework, Essential Skills, Schoolwide Domains, etc.). However, the revised tool offers several key enhancements:

  1. We have separated the assessment of AVID Elective implementation from the assessment of schoolwide impact, allowing schools to engage with the Schoolwide Recognition when schools are ready.
  2. We created a deeper implementation continuum for a strong AVID Elective, with clear benchmarks for growth.
  3. We assess, via the tool, the experience that AVID Elective students have throughout the school day, emphasizing the need for a full day of rigor in core content classes.
  4. We have made a strong AVID Elective implementation a prerequisite for Schoolwide recognition.
  5. We have enhanced the user experience and simplified the process for schools to complete and submit the tool.
