Secondary Implementation Tool

What we know from over 45 years of implementation is that the AVID Elective produces proven results when it is implemented as designed. Strong implementation takes a multi-year commitment to ensure the core components of AVID are in place and fully leveraged over time.

The Secondary Implementation Tool helps schools successfully implement the AVID Elective as the foundation of a successful AVID system, and then build a schoolwide impact to benefit more students on a campus.

The Secondary Implementation Tool is organized into two sections, each with their own continuums: Elective Certification and Schoolwide Recognition. To support the continuous improvement of the school’s AVID system, the AVID Site Team is responsible for:

  • Using the completed Secondary Implementation Tool as a self-assessment and planning resource to inform site goals and identify those aligned with the indicators.
  • Collecting authentic evidence to document progress.
  • Revisiting the tool regularly to sustain growth and for ongoing coaching.
  • Submitting data to AVID Center in the spring to determine the overall certification rating and level of schoolwide recognition based on the level of implementation in each part of the tool.

What's New With the Secondary Implementation Tool?

It is important to know that we have built flexibility into this tool. Some schools may want to focus on the Elective and are not yet ready in their implementation journey to consider the broader schoolwide impacts of AVID. They can complete the elective section and wait until they are ready to move on to the schoolwide section. Other schools may be ready to assess AVID Schoolwide because they already have a strong AVID Elective foundation, and they should do so.

This distinction helps sites focus on the foundation of a quality AVID Elective implementation first, providing more flexibility and options when using the new tool.  While we continue to hold schoolwide implementation as critical to increasing AVID's impact for all students, we prioritize a strong Elective core as the foundation for schoolwide success.

Key Enhancements

With this revision, the core components of AVID remain the same (e.g., AVID Elective, AVID College and Career Readiness Framework, Essential Skills, Schoolwide Domains, etc.). However, the revised tool offers several key enhancements:

  1. We have separated the assessment of AVID Elective implementation from the assessment of schoolwide impact, allowing schools to engage with the Schoolwide Recognition when schools are ready.
  2. We developed a more comprehensive implementation continuum for a robust AVID Elective, with clear benchmarks for growth.
  3. We assess, via the tool, the experience that AVID Elective students have throughout the school day, emphasizing the need for a full day of rigor in core content classes.
  4. We have made a strong AVID Elective implementation a prerequisite for Schoolwide recognition.
  5. We have enhanced the user experience and simplified the process for schools to complete and submit the tool.
